I have just purchased a Canon iP3000 printer which has both a sheet feeder up top and a cassette tray below. But Word from Office 2K Pro will not recognize the sheet feeder. If selected, it will switch back to the cassette on it's own.
I spent a half hour with Canon techs and through a process of elimination, this is the conclusion. Sheet feeder works fine with Excel and Publisher as well as MS Notepad.
If anyone heres of a solution to this, could you please let me know. I'm not sure if the solution should be from Canon or MS.
Just thought I would post this as a warning to anyone buying this double feed printer.

Make sure that you have the latest printer driver. Just because you just bought the printer does not mean you have the latest driver.
Go to the Canon download site and see if the driver they have is the same one included on the CD that came with your printer. Quite often it is not. Printer manufacturers are under constant pressure to get printers out the door. When a driver works they ship the printers. Later they may find that certain modifications either correct problems or make the printer work more efficiently.
This may or may not be your problem, but it is the first place to look.

Thxs Rb. Guess I thought Canon support would have suggested that if there were a newer driver. I can't locate the driver to see the version # in XP to see if the one listed on Canon's web site is newer. Using Aida sys report, it says. v8.09 and on canon's site, the latest driver is v1.80a which seems older than what I have. Unfortunately, thier tech support isn't open on Sat so will try to resolve on Monday. Don't want to download the wrong thing and make things worse.

If you right click on My Computer and select Properties/Hardware?Device Manager and go to your printer, it will give the date and version of the driver installed on your computer.

Don't know if this is of any help, but on Canon Canada's website - locate your printer in the downloads section - select interactive troubleshooting, by choosing Category - "Paper feed problems"
Description - "The paper source cannot be switched" I got this result:
Taken from www.canon.ca
When the paper source cannot be switched in Microsoft Word.
In Microsoft Word, if either Auto Sheet Feeder or Cassette are selected in the Paper Source tab, even if Paper Feed Switch is selected as the paper source in the printer driver or the printer's Paper Feed Switch button is pressed, the paper source does not switch.
When printing from Word, if the paper source cannot be switched by selecting Paper Feed Switch in the printer driver, or using the printer's Paper Feed Switch button, confirm the paper source setting as shown below.
<How to confirm the paper source>
1. Launch Word.
2. From the File menu, select Page Setup.
3. Select Paper Source to confirm the following settings, indicated by the red square below.
<SEE PIC>
When either Auto Sheet Feeder or Cassette are selected, even if Paper Feed Switch is selected as the paper source in the printer driver or the printer's Paper Feed Switch button is pressed, the paper source does not switch.
To switch the paper source, change the settings in the Paper Source tab shown above.
So that the paper source can be switched by selecting Paper Feed Switch in the printer driver, or using the printer's Paper Feed Switch button, select Default tray (Paper Feed Switch) in the Paper Source tab, as shown above.
Hope this helps.

That worked Barkley. Thxs a million. I'd been to the trouble shooter page but I did not see that before and I have a feeling they put it up after I called. Have been so busy haven't gotten back to dealing with this since last week.
btw, I live on 'Barclay' St....Cosmic Connection.:)
