Word will not allow me to pull down the "save in" list.

I am using Word 2000. When I retrieve an existing Word file, modify it, and then try to save it to a different sub directory, the save as dialog box will not respond when I attempt to pull down the save in pull down menu. However, if I start with a new blank document, I have no problems with the "save In" pull down menu. Any suggestions will be much appreciated.
