Hi,
I've got Windows 2000 and Office 97. My problem is that when I spellcheck a document and the spellchecker comes across a word that is not in the dictionary, I add it in the Custom.Dic for further reference. However, when I the same word is encountered in another file, the word is still not found in the dictionary.
I checked the custom.dic file option in the File >> Options >> Spelling and Grammar options and the option is checked. But this problem doesn't resolve even when I disable and re-enable the option.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks.:sleuth:

This may not be part of your problem but after you edit custom.dic, you must re-enable the spell check.
The easiest way to add a word is to right click on the word and then click on "add to dictionary". (I believe right clicking works in Word97; I know it works in later versions)

Hi,
Thanks for the reply, however, i've tried doing it that way too, but it still doesn't work. the word shows up when i reset the spelling and grammar option and run a spellcheck again.
I've tried this on several occasions. Additionally, Winword.exe is launched from Lotus Notes. I've tried running completely new instance of Winword.exe and trying these changes, all to no avail.
Any input is appreciated.

Can you confirm the File Location for your dictionary file?
Are you on a network?

Hi,
The file location is the default location for the file. In addition to these, i've created other custom dictionaries on the PC i currently sit so that i can use it when i have to use another PC.
These other dictionaries are also enabled.
Bringing this up, does Word add the word to all the active custom dictionaries or only to the first one?
If it does, can i just copy and paste the words in the other custom dictionaries into the default location dictionaries and it will work?
Additionally, sometimes i've checked the custom dictionaries that are seclected and find that the other dictionaries other than the default location are selected. This indicates that the other custom dictionaries are not active and words are not being added. This has been a recent problem.
I've tried reactivating these other dictionaries but somehow when another instance of word is run, the options get deactivated.
Any help on these issues will resolve the great problem i've been having.
As an aside, Word performed very well and without this problem earlier. I've gone back and checked the other options in Word to see if any of those will try resolving this issue. But none have worked.
Thanks for the reply.

usuallly custom.dic in XP and W2K is under the usuer name\documents and settings\application Data\Microsoft\proof\ custom.dic
So I would double check if you have established a user name under XP and are you using the same name when adding to the dictionary.
I set mine to a common drive so everyone on the network is accessing the same custom.dic

Hi,
I'm using Office 97 on Win 2k and the file is in a common location under the Administrator folder. Since it is the only login name we can use. As i've stated before, i've had no problem before with this version or any other version of Word.
What i've done now is that i've removed the other custom dictionaries from the list of files that are displayed in the custom dictionary list. I will see if this resolves the issue, else i'll post back if there are any other problems.
Thanks
Lynx.
