Hi ...

I have distributed a template which contains macros. Our application opens documents based on this template. Now this template is sitting on the machines of all users within the network.

The users of my template will have mostly ms-word 97, a few will have word 2000 & some may even have word-2002(XP). So far my template has worked on all client machines, as by default their macro security level is set to medium .

But in case any user has set his macro settings to high, then my macros should not work, which is a problem for me.

Related to this I have the following questions:

1. In word-97 are there any security settings against macros like in word-2000. I do not see them in tools->macros...?Does this mean that there is no funda of macro security in 97?

2. Majority of my users as of now use word-97. But they may move on to word-2000 in future. Then if users set their macro security to High , what do i do? I cannot possibly ask them to keep their security settings to medium.

Any inputs in this regard will be greatly appreciated...

thanx in advance

PS: so far I have not thought of signing the macros, as I did not get this in 97 & I too am not fully aware of the same...

When you go to Tools> Macros there is an option to setup Trusted Sources. IF you have yourself set as a trusted source then the high security setting will still allow your macros to run.

In Word 97, this can be found under Tools-Options, General tab. There are no levels; you re just notified if there s code in the file or not.

It s my feeling that your users should be made aware of macro security, and yes--you should ask them to keep it at medium. Perhaps a short presentation to dept managers on macro security is in order. Sorry, that s just my feeling on it. Perhaps someone else has a suggestion for you.

Alternatively, you could place some red text at the top of the document that tells them they must turn macros on, and how. If they have macros turned off, they ll see it right away. If they have macros turned on--well, your first macro could wipe that text out so they never have to see it. Does that make sense?
