Hi, What should I do to get a job as a help desk specialist? Other than placement is there a way out to break into the IT fields. All comments and suggestions are highly appreciated, thanks in progress.

Take some exams, and make some phone calls, as suggested by donmorley. Get an MCSE or some MCP's, at least you are showing prospective employers that you are willing and serious about a job in I.T.
I spent 2 years on a helpdesk as my first job and would suggest this to anyone as a good starting place; pay is crap but you will learn the foundations required etc. Have a look at web based job boards too. If you are willing and have some exams behind you then I am sure you'll get an entry level position somewhere.
Good luck
