Hello: Wondering if you can possibly help me out here:

When I go to install the officeXP service pack 2 it shows that it is already downloaded, but when I go to install it and when it asks for the microsoft works suite disc I put it in and then clik ok and I end up with an error message 1706. Not right installation pkg.
Then it tells me to find word.msi in another folder or to check windows explorer under C:\program files\microsoft office\office10\1033\setup.hlp.
I did that but can't find the setup.hlp. Any suggestions. Your help is appreciated thank you.

Hi, Carole.

I've moved your question to the Miscellaneous area. The security and updates area is for posting of issues or alerts from the software guys...not really for questions. Nobody posts in it, though, so maybe I oughta just get rid of it. :)

I'll change the title of your question too, if necessary.

You say Office, but then you say that it requests the Microsoft WORKS suite disk? Is that correct? Or did you mean Office?

Welcome to the board!

Hello: I tried to post this earlier in miscelleanous but it wouldn't let me. Hope it's okay to post thread here.

I was asking about office updates:
I have the microsoft works suite 2002. I also have in start, programs, microsoft office tools and on the side bar of it it has activate product, clip organizer, office application recovery, doc imaging, doc, scanning, shortcut bar, xp language. save my settings wizard. I run win 98 se.
I went to office updates and used the detection engine and it showed that I could install SP2, and word 2002 update. I have sp1 already. It shows up in the about microsoft office shortcut bar. When I went to install the sp2 it downloaded but would not install. It said to put in the word 2002 disk. The only disk I have is the microsoft suite disk. I thought I could use it as this is where I
installed the word 2002 from. When I tried I Got error 1706.
Then said check for WORD.MSI in another folder from which you can install microsoft word 2002, or go to windows explorer to C:\program file\microsoft office\office 10\1033\setup.hlp. I tried that but couldn't find it. It said install unsuccessful.
Now I am lost and don't know what to do. Can you help me? Also if i can't install the sp2 or the word 2002 update is there any way i can get rid of what it downloaded for the SP2. Thanking you very much for your help.

Hi, Carole.

I've moved your new thread into here. There was no reason for you to re-post. But no matter!

If you are using Works suite, then there is no reason that you should be doing Office updates. I believe that is the problem. They are two different suites.

Unless you told the installation where to download to, then it is likely in your windows temp folder. On a Windows 98 system, you can get there via Windows explorer and go to C:\windows\temp or, on any operating system, just hit Start-Run and type %temp% and hit enter.

You should be able to delete the contents of the temp folder, but make sure you have all applications closed before attempting to do so.

I don't know why you weren't able to post here last night, but if you cannot reply to this question, I hope you'll email me again about it.

Thank you dreamboat. I will try what you said to do. Does this mean then that i don't need to get office updates? And also when you say to go tostart run %temp% that will clean out what was downloaded then.?
Thanks for your response to these questions.

I cleaned my pc but when i did the %temp% there is a file in there Jet3d8f.tmp In the C:\Windows\Temp that won't let me delete it. it says Jet3d8f access denied: Make sure disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not currently in use. Also on my C: hard drive their is 2.66 available space and in my internet it is set at 40. Is this okay?

Can you explain this? Thanks

After reading this, if you want to reply, DO NOT hit the New Reply button anywhere.

Instead, hit the Reply button that appears just below and to the right of what you are reading...there is no need to create a new thread each time.

Ignore that little jet file. I'm not sure what it is. I have it on my system too... Just select all BUT that file and delete everything else.

Also, you have 2.66 available space. Is that MB or GB?

What is the 40 that your internet is set to take? If it is 40MB AND your available space is 2.66GB, you can put the 40MB up to 400MB, which might be better. But it is the setting to "empty temporary internet files folder on browser close" that will mean the most for your "surfing pleasure". :D

Hope this all helps, girlfriend!

Sure. Try this and let me know:

Start-Search-All Files or Folders

the file name is mso*.exe

It'll be something like mso10.exe, so if you find that file, just double-click it.

If that doesn't work, I'll find it for ya.

Here ya go.

If what I said above doesn't work, or you never find a file, do the instructions from this article:

Unable to find it. But what I did I went to explorer and found in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office 10 the Msoffice .exe.

When I cliked on it it brought back my office toolbar, so then I went into the start and then settings, taskbar and then added it into my microsoft office tools and named it microsoft shortcut bar.
It works but don't know if it will automatically come on and stay when i shut down my puter, or if I have to go into programs, ms tools and clik on it each time.

Would i be able to disable the ms office startup and office starup that doesn't work anymore at all in the msconfig?

And would you please tell me if it doesn't automatically start when i shut down and then turn on my puter what avenue i can take then. You have really been kind to help me out, would be lost without your help.I keep trying to learn as i await answers and thats how i came up with this first paragraph. THANKS AGAIN

No problem, Carole. The whole idea of the forum is to help out people just like you.

:D

It should startup when you restart your PC. The Office startups in your msconfig also do other things, so I would leave them there.

You can take the msoffice.exe file and place a shortcut to it in your C:\windows\startup (if Windows 98) or in Win 2K/ME/XP, you can right-click your Start button and hit properties. Hit the advanced button and find and add the msoffice.exe to your startup there. That should make it start automatically too.

:)

I will give it a whirl and post back the results to ya. I assume it was okay to put it into the ms office tools like i did right?

Thanks bunches

Hello Dreamboat: I now have my 2 toolbars. The microsoft office with the applications I use regularly, and the one with the start button and the quick launches i don't use that often.

I tried with just restart, and also with shutdown and they bith worked fine. My ms office toolbar came up automatically.
What I did was I put the msoffice.exe into the startup folder in start, programs, startup. I couldn't use advanced as i don't have that. I run win98se. The office startup and msoffice startup are osa.exe's the ones that didn't work so Idisabled them. Should I just keep them in the disabled or remove them completely?

What do you think?

Again hats off to you, you really are a dream. Thank you ever so much.

Sure.

The osa's aren't really necessary, but that's not all they do. The help the Office programs load a bit faster. However, when I ran Win98, all I had in my startup (via msconfig) was my virus scanner and systray.

:)

Thanks for your kind words!
